A few days ago I posted the first installment of the Bump J vs. Rick Ross saga, and although I didn't mention what Part II was going to entail, I think most of you probably figured it out (as noted in the comments section).
Prior to shocking the world with his breakout hit, "Hustlin", the beat Rick Ross made famous was in the hands of Chicago's Bumpy Johnson.
As the story goes, Craig Kallman of Atlantic Records first gave the beat to Bump to use on his highly anticipated debut, Nothing To Lose. After Bump recorded and laid his version of "Hustlin", the track somehow managed to land in the hands of Ted Lucas with Slip-N-Slide Records, who at the time still had a situation through Trick Daddy at Atlantic. Ted gave the beat to Rick Ross who then laid his version and took the world by storm. The rest, as they say, is history.
A common misconception is that Bump's version was just a freestyle over Officer Ross' beat - not true.
Judge for yourself.

plus i'm chi so i go with bump
Bump version was better, I thought Bump had that beat officially. When I heard that shit I was like this nigga gotta straight up banger.
My dude was just telling me about this the day before you posted the 1st installment. Crazy.
ross
I've been telling fools this for years and aint no-one believe me.. Telling me I'm just Chi biased
yeah i was fooled too...i thought it was jus a freestyle...but now i notice if it was he woulda had to have that beat EXTRA early...they was labelmates tho thru atlantic so it makes sense...
bump verse was just gutta and southside as a MUFUCKA...
Ross shit was a hit...
business...
oh is anybody else kinda trippin on seein that picture of rick and bump again...
seen it b4 but now it got me thinkin bout rick...
r.i.p.
Fuck Dick Moss
bumpy was always dope. just couldnt get on. save bumpy
i already knew this shit joe, bump j verion was better, rick ross is a fat ass fake
Bump's version was decent for the mixtape circuit, but Rick Ross turned it into A HIT! BIG DIFFERENCE. Bump's biggest hold back is the fact that he doesn't make HITS! All that "so Chicago" shit only impresses US, no one else outside of our world! TRUST ME, that had ALOT to do with his album being shelved: international marketability. The world is SO much bigger than Chicago, yet for someone who actually had the chance to experience this fact firsthand, he couldn't deprogram himself for US! I think we really needed him to accurately explain us to the rest of the world, I just think he didn't know how to use tact to go about it correctly.
flipside u right, i never thought about it like that
Flipside you're wrong..He did accurately describe us but that had nothing to do withwhy his album didn't drop see most nigga will take a bad deal and complain he took the best deal in the industry at that time not just Chi and refused to play label politics and got more money even we asked out. Learn from Chief you fools he's in control of his own shit now best position possible..
congrats on the one year anniversary. personally, i haven't listened to rick ross since i saw that picture of him in a C.O. outfit. might as well clear out some HD space.
Yeah right-Bump murdered that harder than Ross. All label politics...Ross was in better position with Ted Lucas. Bump explained "them" perfectly because we aren't all goons! He had everything in place and then out of nowhere he was off the map. If he had the label behind him like Ross, Bump would have that spot! And we all know the goonsquad "report" on the streets. Stains all day long. Lyor wasn't having his name in that bullshit.
Rick Ross's version was just a much better song.
PERIOD
This shit is a business. If you only make'n music for you and yo fam to vibe to...thats cool! Great in fact! But bumps main issue is not being able to make full compositions...aka great songs from begining to end...Hooks, Verses and Concepts. He's a MIXTAPE slayer. We all know that...and a better rapper than Rick Ross and many others.
But He HAS to develop as an all around artist in order to make any impact outside of Chicago.
Ross got it!!!
I agree with FlipSide and the last Anonymous

Not to argue with you, but you're missing my point. I'm didn't mention anything about a bad deal, I'm stating the obvious facts. Ross made a hit. As far as his deal, two years ago, I had a convo. with one of HIS producers, and it was explained to me that inside those album meetings, there was ALOT of talk about his album being too REGIONAL CONCENTRATED. I don't make this stuff up, as I stated we needed him, he just STILL has ALOT of growing to do as an artist...
Rick Ross version was better for the market. Bumps version is a CHICAGO CLASSIC. And Bump is my favorite rapper from the Chi HANDS DOWN so I'm speaking honestly. Ricks version was just a better record overall for EVERYONE.Bumps was Classic cuz it was so Chicago!I give Rick the slight nod on this one.
i dont know what yall listening too...but bump can make DEFINITELY make a complete song...ALONG wit slay mixtapes...the deal situation had nothin to do wit his talent or ability to get past JUST a verse......im sure of that...
RasRok your wrong Bump as much as I like him he can not make SONGS...he's not a songwriter and he dont come up with good melodies. Ross was better. Plus I dont think Bump is marketable at all thats what lead to getting dropped from Atlantic...Think about it Nigga's dont want to be him and bitches dont want to fuck him
whaaaaaat....bump whole style is based on melody....and most of goon squad choruses be hard shit said IN a melody or cadence....have you heard dinnertime?
....w 2 gville? shit i remember they used to have another name for they shit b4 goon squad cant remember what it was....but they mixtape back THEN was hard, sly mikkey and bump had a BANGA on that bitch...(we dont listen to rock and roll/....get the rocks and roll....DAMN!!!) back when they was fuckin wit point n mys...
i jus feel like he one of the best niggas to come out to speak OUR language...and he PURPOSELY speaks OUR LANGUAGE...
far as the deal, im well into that circle....i just dont know the WHOLE story as to what happened...
i PERSONALLY...ima say it again...PERSONALLY think homie a hell of a artist...dont know if bitches tryin ta fuck him....hahaha...but bout 3 yrs ago ALLL the shawtys was holla'in GOON Squad....that summer was EXTRA grimy by the way...anybody notice that? bump? hahaha
Success...
i think they name was heads up...b4 goon squad...pretty sure of it...
dont get me wrong RasRok I fucks with Bump I just dont think he write the songs that the whole world would sing and the melodies he do come up with are mediocore at best not hits by a longshot. I was at the dinnertime release party...great mixtape...but its no crossover records on there, theres nothing for the bitches that make them feel sexy on there, theres nothing with a message on there, theres nothing on there that makes me say wow, or what the fuck he say.Bump is a great local talent I just dont think for a marketable standpoint he would be able to sell records. just my point of view. I knew them niggas when they use to fuck with Arab Jay and ThoroughBred Ent. and I dont think he's grown yet as a artist.
see but thas where we differ....i dont necessarily think a artist gotta be "well-rounded" to be potent at what they do....even from a MAINSTREAM standpoint...if somebody like yo song its not off the strength of your OTHER shit...they jus like that song...from there it gets easier for them to like the next one they hear...
and yeah its questionable if the " WHOLE WIDE WORLD" would sing no new niggaz....whattup CHASE!... but i know a gang of niggas from other cities that would...cuz niggas hustlin ERWHERE...and niggas identify wit that lifestyle ERWHERE...
as far as females...broads like grimy shit now...they be singin the same shit niggas be singin...singin bout murders, pistols, grams, bitches...all type o shit...so content rules are changin in the game...im sho homie could come up wit SUMN to make'em fuck wit it...
i hear u tho...
he def had every hood in Chicago screaming GOOOONNNN SQUAAAADDD for at least a year.
i think the true elephant in the room is the pic w/ rick james?
is no one going to acknowledge/explain this?
^ Where you been? That pics old news. You don't remember "On The Run" feat. Rick James and produced by Kanye West?
But anyway, I gotta give it to Ross once again. His shit is CLASSIC. Probably gonna go down in history as on of the best rap songs ever. That "You see 22s..." shit was genius.
FLIPSIDE hit the nail on the head. Bump is too regional. When he was poppin heavy nobody outside of the city new who he was. When every other artist built their buzz they were known worldwide (50 Cent & G-Unit, Wale, The Cool Kids etc.). Making music strictly for you block won't get you far. Think about the cats from the crib who ARE on. The proof is in the pudding. The local artists just need to follow their need. Everybody's thinking too small.
Plus he had LYOR backing him. How on earth can you fail when dude co-signs you? He's who brought Hov, DMX & Ja to the masses. And gangster rap was HUGE in '03. A kid by the name of 50 Cent had every rapper in the world pulling hammers out on DVDS. So his background would've been perfect for marketing. But he didn't deliver. I have NOTHING TO LOSE on CD and it's definately not good by any means.
Also, he severed ties w/ Free Maiden (who he was signed to via Free 4 All/Atlantic) so that had a lot to do with it as well. But musically he wasn't up there yet, in my humble opinion. And '03 Bump better than '08 Bump so who knows if he'll ever get another chance. But I heard he's working with NO I.D. now so I hope so.
You brothers don lost yall mind. Bump kilt that real talk and brains bodysnatched that track. fuck ross Bump went to hard on that the Life and nigz was all on ross dick.
i like the gucci bandanna beat THAT DONT MAKE IT A GOOD SONG. u offbrand ass nigga's letting production judge which song better, yall better watcg the lyrics
^^^^ "i like the gucci bandanna beat THAT DONT MAKE IT A GOOD SONG. u offbrand ass nigga's letting production judge which song better, yall better watcg the lyrics"
Ummm... You do realize that their on the same track right, Mr. Love, Hate, Kill, Take?
eeeeeee!!! ya'll goin hard on this topic
Becca, tell me you are joking!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4AwzQXBM4Q
i remember the thorobred cd....bump was crazy...."that's right you nerds done lost it/ i get my shit from scratch you shop on 63rd n Halsted/"....classic Johnson
bump wack as shit
I think just the fact that you didn't have to post the Ross ver shows that he won.
WELL THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS...THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN U JAGG A GOOD ASS RECORD DEAL OFF....U JAG GOOD AS RECORDS....I DONT FAULT RICK ROSS ONE BIT...BUMP COULD HAVE A BETTER VERSE BUT WHO GIVES A SHIT CUZ WE KNOW THIS RECORD AS RICK ROSS...SO WHATS A GOOD LOTTERY TICKET IF U DONT CASH IT IN, THROW IT AWAY AND THE NEXT MAN FINDS IT....THERES THE "THAT WAS MINES 1ST"....BUT THIS TRACK IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF HOW BUMP FUCKED UP....I HOPE HE GET BACK ON THOUGH
Aye Bump ain't fuck up! Would you rather be rich and famous with no control of your creativity or would you rather be patient and have full control over your whole career? Remember when you take away an artist's control of their creativity thats like taking away a person's soul. Bump knows what he's doing its just a lot of people are on the outside looking in.
fuck is all that shit sposed to mean
hahaha....
Aye solidfoe, I'm sayin' Bump woulda been a puppet doing everything they say over at Atlantic with no say so.
yea that nigga would'nt have been a puppet there...he had the same deal (actually better) then T.I. had when he signed that big ass deal to Atlantic in the 1st place...he got a lotta money for the rec deal and a lotta money for the publishing deal. That nigga was goin in wit the most creative freedom of any artist there...oh yea and wtf is wrong wit Hustlin...sounds like creative freedom..plan and simple that nigga fucked up...everyone knows it except u
oh yea AND that nigga went in wit 5 Kanye Tracks plus that Rick Ross shit...sounds like a fuck up in management or somethin to me
naw charlie im talkin to that offbrand ass nigga flipside
if you look in your posts you will have the answers you need to why he was not successful and why he is successful
I think that all of bumps shit is hot and I believe that Sly is going to be the next Bump J. I use to sit down with Sly in the mornings and watch him write his rhymes. If you listen to the shit him and bump use to make together with the Goon Squad and take the time to feel it it's all real. They are some real ass nigga's talkin' about real life shit. You either hate it or love and I love. They aren't fake gangsta's.
