Battle of the Beats: Bump J vs. Rick Ross - with special guest Trey Songz

Today I bring you another edition of FSD's Battle of the Beats series, however, we'll call this episode the "hook edition". Today we have Officer Rick Ross and Bump J squaring off, with Trey Songz in the middle.

Apparently, Mr. Songz sold the same hook (remember: don't try that with Tru Life) to Ricky Ross and Bumpy Johnson, altering it a bit for Ricky's latest album Trilla.  Due to label limbo and industry politricks, Bump's version has never seen the light of day - until now.

So my question is: which track is better?  Do you go with Lt. Ross, or with the Chief of Chicago, Bump J? Is Trey Songz shiesty for this, or is that just how it goes in this business?  The topic is up for discussion - as always.

But I warned you Bump was coming, right?  Look for Bump vs. Rick Ross Part II coming soon.

You can't blame Trey for Bump's album getting shelved.

Being that I'm going into law enforcement, I'm gonna have to roll with Officer Richard Ross on this one.

Bump's track is nice, but Ross comes through with better production which makes the song livelier.

And like TY said, you can't blame Trey. He's just trying to get paid.

This is a business and he tryin to eat off his craft. Not his fault that Bump album got shelved.I don't understand why it did cuz it was a cold ass album but the industry is aleays gonna be a business first.

AND for the record Bumps version of HUSTLIN was better than Ross's...shiiiit...i thought it was HIS song at first...n he only had 1 verse...

YP said...

u aren't the only one who thought "Hustlin" was Bump's first...I have had the song wit Trey Songz since like 05....Bump killed it...."trips to Aspen, me and Drakie D fallin downhill laugin/ orgies in the cabin money keep spinnin (spendin) like Davin's/ back and forth to BP runnin through magnums".....

^ You do know that's a Pharell line right? Just flipped a bit.

But Rick Ross version > Bump version.

His beat was waaaay better and the overall song was BANANAS. If it wasn't for the C.O. shit that joint would've been a big hit for Ross.

When I hear Bimp's version it don't really sound like "The Life." Rick Ross shit sounds like MONEY, SUCCESS, "THE LIFE" for real.

Nice to hear some old Bump though.

yall niggas is BLIND! Put your associations, and loyalties aside for a second. That shit is NOT on NO LEVEL seein da RICKY ROSS "This is Da LIFE". (and I like Bump). I'm just bein realistic. That hook sounds waaay betta on da Rick Ross album. Bumps bars MIGHT be crazier, but Rick Ross joint is a betta SONG Period! Same thing wit "Everyday i'm hustlin". Bumps joint was cool, But Rick Ross's version is a Certified HIT! Please Stop wit da nonsense.

that Pharrell line actually came out after this song was made...i remember hearing Mr. Me Too for the first time thinkin like man joe it sounds like he biting Bump....i thought it sounded like what a song about the life should be from a nigga from the Chi..."Now it's Moet Chandon for Breakfast and the best puff/ you stay blowin on that stress huff/"......where the Ruth's Chris Im buying/ waiter come out wit the plate, steak sound like it's still fryin/"....idk...i think overall Bump's version was better than Ross....

^^Very True^^

Still ridin with Bump tho. He from my city. But if it was some random nigga from somewhere else Rick's joint is definitely better.

i aint being biased tho i feel like ross style of music is strictly based on production so i cant say he better than bump as an artist jus cause he might have better direction and production...but i guess if u talkin songs and hits its different, but i still think bump japped harder on this song than damn near anybody out right now, almost reminiscent of biggie type breath control it was jus a ill rap record, i guess i'm judging from a rappers perspective tho

question...who had the hook first? ethier way, i def rock w/ the ross joint harder! i remember first hearn the joint and goin crazy! Trey is a beast! Personally, as a hook writer myself you gotta make and take as many opportunities as you can! so no, trey aint shiesty. Its all just about who gon really use it and push it to its full potential...and Ross did that! Also, I think the hook is too aggressive for the slowed tempo of Bumps version anyways, still hott tho none the less!!!

Dutch Dinero said...

to answer the who had first question...bump j had the hook first and on top of that bump j song go way way harder ross joint...i swear the hood went crazy like that shit sound familiar...this nigga ross jacked the bump hook no fair but it is what it is...and behind the scene trey wrote the hook in my belief so he was on his business...but hands down Bump J...that ...."trips to Aspen, me and Drakie D fallin downhill laugin/ orgies in the cabin money keep spinnin (spendin) like Davin's/ back and forth to BP runnin through magnums".....tell me that dont speak to you....the baddest black bitches with credit white bitches with asses

Dutch Dinero said...

this aint no association thing this real shit bump killed ross bar for bar...the beat is classic on bump shit...ross is all production on his song...it sound like ppl goin wit ross cause he on and not really payin attention to the two songs in comparison

ChicaGo-Getter said...

^ In my opinion, that's the difference between a rapper and an atrist. A rapper raps (i.e. Canibus) and a artist makes songs (i.e. Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Biggie). I think that's what holds most Chicago niggas back.

Bump is one of the realest niggas ever and Ross is a former C.O. who may or may not have sold drugs. But Ross persona is more believable than Bumps on that song.

There's no way on earth Bumps beat is better than Ross beat. It's not even close and the hook sounded terrible over the production. If it wasn't Bump I wouldn't even listen to that shit.

Ross version sounds like a hit record. Bump's sounds like track 10 on a demo. Just being real. I fuck with Bump but there is no comparison between the two.

When you create songs you're suppose to draw the listener into your world. Ross did that. Everytime I hear that shit I feel like I need to be a the club standing on a couch popping bottles with models and shit. Bump was spitting some shit but overall it's not up to par with the Ross.

I like Bump shit better than rick ross's. I just feel like bump is just better rapper than ross. Trey songs kinda made the hook better for bump, just cause he say "it the prince and the chief". Ross got the video out on, on demand. But at the end of the day bump made it a better song.

yo bump did better then ross i only listen to both of them first verses but just hearing listening to there lyrical content i think people are more familar with rick but bump lines are better (bogusboys)and im being honest and bump is more clear then rick

YP said...

ChicaGo-Getter i understand what you are saying as far as being a rapper and an artist...but i don't think Bump is just running thru the beat on this one....I got a vivid picture from the verses he spit on there....I agree though Ross had the better beat suited for that song.....but as far as the content it further pulls me toward Bump's version...."..penthouse wit the ocean view to tell the truth this shit's overdue/ if you could've seen what I was goin thru/ 14 runnin thru them o's for food/ to feed my folk, and school?/I paid tuition myself..."....that's real....and that's what i got from the song....it might just be me but I get pulled to the reality in a song....

Webb said...

YP .. You took the words right out my mouth famo.. That the reality in the song pulled me in

FlipSide said...

Ross' version was 10 times better, just on the strength of the beat, and the way Trey Songz went in and REMASTERED the chorus! When he did it for Bump, it sounded mixtape-ish, but he really had it perfected by the time it made it to Ross. Bump's lyricism is without a doubt killing Ross' on this song. I was sold from the first verse, really vivid and well-thought out. I can respect a clear thinker (even if it's only restricted to his music).

ChicaGo-Getter said...

^ Basically my whole point. You can spit the craziest shit ever but if the song aint put together right it don't mean nothing.

^^^^ yup! yup! yup!
